Sustainability and Science Showcase for a better planet

Issued: 8 Jun 2021

Sustainability experts, the latest research and innovative ideas to help protect the planet will be available to Queenslanders during the Sustainability and Science Showcase.

The event, which is being held at the Queensland Museum on 13 June 2021, is being hosted by the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist and CitySmart.

Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Hugh Possingham said the Sustainability and Science Showcase would highlight positive changes the community can make to help the environment thrive.

“This is the perfect event for Queenslanders who are looking for ways to make a difference to our environment,” Professor Possingham said.

“We know the planet is facing some big challenges, and there has never been a more important time to take personal action,”

“Attendees will have access to the best available science from the experts, who will provide actions and ideas for all Queenslanders to help protect the planet.

“The Sustainability and Science Showcase will provide attendees with practical ways they can reduce their carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels.

“Intrepid minds can find out how to join citizen science projects or environment and land care groups, as well as minimising waste and use of plastics.

“The event will be a fun family day out, and will include three information forums, along with science and art workshops for children and an exciting wildlife display.

“Universities will showcase their latest research and eco-friendly organisations will provide information on sustainability.

“Attendees can also learn about the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and take a pledge to help transform our world.”

Professor Possingham said many Queenslanders had already made lifestyle changes to help protect the environment.

“There’s a real community push to do more, and I encourage Queenslanders to attend the event and learn about how we can all work together to change our future,” he said.

CitySmart Interim CEO Tracy Melenewycz said CitySmart has a long history delivering sustainability events such as the Green Heart Fair, on behalf of Brisbane City Council.

“CitySmart is proud to bring this event to Brisbane, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for residents to find simple and effective ways to reduce their environmental impact and live a more sustainable lifestyle,” Ms Melenewycz said.

The Sustainability and Science Showcase is a free event, delivered by CitySmart and the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist.

The community event coincides with the Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2021 (SRI2021) being held between 12-15 June 2021.
