Science outreach and education

Every Queenslander can get involved in science.

We want everyone to value and understand science, and the role science and technology play in our everyday lives. Being a critical thinker enables us to participate in public discussions about policies and decisions that impact our communities.

Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills and scientific literacy improve critical thinking, engineering-design thinking, social sciences, problem-solving, creativity, our understanding of statistics and much, much more.

We work closely with the Department of Education and other partners to help inspire young people to consider choosing STEM subjects and careers. STEM education activities are designed to engage students, spark their interest in science and subsequently encourage higher uptake of STEM subjects in school, leading to further study to boost Queensland’s workforce.

We encourage all Queenslanders to participate in science and critically examine information they come across as they go about their everyday lives.

Opportunities to get involved in science

• Parents, teachers and students can search the STEM learning opportunities in Queensland for a vast array of activities, workshops and STEM provider contacts.
• You can join a National Science Week event to celebrate science each August.
• You can participate in a real science project by being involved in citizen science – visit the project finder on the Australian Citizen Science Association website to find an activity in your area.
• Visit Inspiring Australia Queensland to find science events and information about activities happening in Queensland.
• Follow the Flying Scientists on social media to find out when they are visiting your regional area, and join in their events.
• Visit the Department of Education’s STEM hub that brings together information, resources and advice for students and parents wanting to learn more about STEM.
